The Pond house, now her house, is quiet after sunset. The TARDIS may be cooler, but it isn't unpleasant and there's no chance of running into manic snogging in a hallway if the TARDIS feels cheeky. Plus, she's wrangled a set of speakers to play jazz quietly in the background of her studying.
Presently, she's turned sideways against the back of the couch with her arm up along the back holding a glass of chilled white wine. In front of her bare bent-up knees, a heavy textbook lies open. She sips the wine and turns a page, so content in the moment to just be herself she almost doesn't hear the arrival of a very welcome guest.
She does hear him, however, and glances up from her studying to smile softly. "Hark, you. I'm glad you decided to come here. I wasn't relishing a night at the TARDIS, even if it meant spending time with you." She extends a bare foot toward him, trying to touch his leg. "Come join me, and I'll even put this book down."
Jack grins as he shuts the door behind him. He doesn't relish any of the house's other occupants stumbling into what he hoped would be a lovely quiet evening. He is wearing the dark blue shirt and grey suspenders tonight and carrying a pizza box in one hand and a set of beer bottles in the other.
He set it all down on the coffee table and proclaimed. "I come bearing beer, pizza and my own good self."
"Two guesses which I'm most interested in, and the first doesn't count," Martha answers with a quiet laugh.
If he needs even one, he's not paying attention to the way her gaze roams over him. Some of that, she knows, is pure reflex, born of having left him behind in the Master's ship and needing to assure herself he's in one piece. But more and more, it's just a reaction to his presence, to appreciating him.
As promised, she closes the book and puts it aside, and then finishes the last of her wine and sets that down too. Instead of waiting for him to come sit (she's impatient), she unfolds herself from the couch and pads over to him. "Hello, you," she says more softly, and slips her arms around him.
His already bright smile goes supernova when she wraps her arms around his
neck. He mirrors her action only his hands go to her waist. "Hello
yourself," he purrs softly as he starts humming along with the music. "Are
we alone tonight?"
"Mm-hmm." She lifts her head to see that smile and her eyes brighten to see him so happy. Her stomach flips a little at knowing somehow it's her that makes it that way, and she's only a little self-conscious when she can't resist the slip of her fingers through the back of his hair.
"With all the chaos lately, I thought we could use the retreat, yeah?"
His soft hum deepens and he closes his eyes. He's always enjoyed having his
hair stroked and to have someone he cared about doing it is icing on the
cake. "Not that I'm not happy they figured out their issues, but it is nice
to have someplace quiet for just us."
"They were doing my head in, that's for sure." She loves the feel of him, warm and solid against her, like a wall between herself and any trouble. "I could hardly hear myself think. And welcome as it is to have the TARDIS taking care of all the little things, it's a bit nice not to have Big Sister watching over us, yeah?"
A little privacy for figuring out what they mean to each other is no mean thing.
Jack chuckled. "She does enjoy doing a little matchmaking that's for
certain. And for the first time in a long time I actually can think. I like
her song but it's nice not to have someone mentally poking me all the
time."
In answer, Martha poked him lightly in the side. "Now you've only got my poking to put up with." And she poked him again, leaning her weight into him to get him to sit. As much as having a hug was nice, a cuddle on the couch would be nicer.
Everything in her goes gooey for that smile, and she knows better than to let herself fall like this for the Captain Jack Harkness. But as she settles onto the couch and into his arms, she shuts that thought away. Today, here, right now, she deserves the warmth of this and more to the point, she needs it.
Her hand settles on his chest and their noses might as well be touching when she murmurs, "Here. Now what?"
"What would you like," Jack says softly, "this evening was and is about you
Martha. You get to set the pace here." He smiles again. "So what would you
like tonight."
She cocks her head and lifts her hand to stroke the back of her knuckles along his jaw. "It's about us, not me." Because even now she's not going to let him play the hero. "All I want is for us to be real with each other, yeah?"
"Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies," he replies with a smile,
"I mean that Martha Talk to me and ask me whatever you want and I'll answer
whatever questions you want answered."
Martha thinks about it, her gaze playing softly over his face and hand coming to rest against his collarbone with her fingers (unknowingly, but intentionally) resting lightly against his pulse. There's no hurry to ask anything at all, since what she meant was general rather than specific.
Kissing him isn't a thought, even though it's new for them. It's a breath, an instinct, and just the gentlest play of her lips against his. "Are you in love with me?"
